Pregnancy is a season full of change—and sometimes, discomfort. But it doesn’t have to be a season of pain without relief. I recently spoke with Dr. Katie McLuckie of Lucky Chiropractic to learn more about prenatal chiropractic care and how it can support expecting moms.
What is Prenatal Chiropractic Care?
Dr. Katie explains:
“Prenatal Chiropractic care is a form of chiropractic care that is tailored specifically for pregnant patients. It is a great option for expecting moms because it is a great way to help manage pain without any medication.”
She also shares about a special certification many prenatal chiropractors earn called the Webster Technique:
“The Webster Technique requires chiropractors to go through focused education and treatment guidelines for pregnant patients. This technique focuses on balancing the ligaments and muscles of the pelvis to restore balance and motion. All of which allows for a smoother labor and delivery.”
What Pregnancy-Related Conditions Does Prenatal Chiropractic Care Help With?
Dr. Katie often treats pregnancy-related low back pain and sciatica:
“The most common thing that I treat in the pregnant population is pregnancy-related low back pain and sciatica. Unfortunately, I am often a ‘last resort’ because their pain is so bad.”
She also helps moms with breech babies, noting,
“The Webster Technique helps with breech babies by balancing the ligaments and muscles of the pelvis, which allows the baby to move more freely and get in the proper head-down position.”
Advice for Pregnant Women Considering Chiropractic Care
If you’re hesitant or unsure about prenatal chiropractic care, Dr. Katie offers some important advice:
“Find a Webster Certified Chiropractor. Setup a consultation with the chiropractor beforehand—ask all the questions and voice all of your concerns. If you are uncomfortable with any part of the treatment or have questions, say something! As a provider in the field, my main goal is to help you and for you to feel comfortable through the whole process.”
