Guided by Roadhouse Photographer
When I sat down with Joanna, a Traditional Midwife at Heritage Birth Service, it didn’t take long to feel the depth of heart she brings into her work. She’s warm, honest, experienced, and incredibly down-to-earth — exactly the type of woman you’d trust walking beside you through one of the most sacred seasons of your life.
For Joanna, birth work didn’t begin with textbooks or certifications.
It began much earlier — with fascination, tenderness, and a deep love for pregnancy and the women walking through it.
“I’ve been catching babies for 13 years,” Joanna shared. “Before that, I was a doula. All together, I’ve been in the birth world almost 20 years.”
Her passion for birth started when she became a mother herself. She describes her first pregnancy as something she truly loved. That joy became a calling — one that eventually led her to doula work, then apprenticing under a senior midwife, and finally into her role as a primary midwife.
A Life Shaped By Birth Work
Joanna’s journey wasn’t a straight line.
She originally considered becoming a nurse midwife, but every door closed.
Later, after her fourth baby was born, a different door opened — doula training. Soon after, she connected with an experienced midwife, began apprenticing, and the rest unfolded naturally.
What stood out to me was how much relationship is woven into every part of her story.
She doesn’t just serve women — she walks with them, gets to know them, and often keeps contact with them long after their babies arrive.
“Trust is everything,” she said. “For me, the relational side is just as important as the clinical side. They need to trust me, and I need to trust them.”
Midwifery Is Not Just Clinical — It’s Connection
Unlike the brief, clinical appointments most women experience in a traditional OB setting, Joanna’s care is spacious, thoughtful, and deeply personal.
Appointments aren’t 7 minutes long.
They are conversations.
Pregnancy, stress, nutrition, fears, birth vision, postpartum planning — nothing is brushed past.
“We talk about everything — even things like, are you fighting with your husband? Are you stressed? How are you sleeping?”
Not because she’s nosy.
But because whole-person care matters.
Stress affects blood pressure.
Nutrition affects energy and growth.
Relationships affect hormones and rest.
The body isn’t separate from the heart — and she treats it that way.
Informed Choice Is the Foundation
One of the most refreshing things Joanna shared was her stance on birth choices.
I don’t care what you choose — hospital birth, home birth, C-section, even free birth — as long as you make an informed choice.”
No judgment.
No agenda.
Only informed, safe, empowered decision-making.
As a mom who’s had both a hospital birth and a home birth, that resonated with me deeply. So many women feel defensive or judged when they share where or how they birthed. Joanna made it clear: birth isn’t one-size-fits-all — and that’s okay.
Why Women Are Turning Toward Midwives
As Joanna explained her philosophy of care, it became clear why more and more families are exploring midwifery and home birth:
- They want to feel seen and heard.
- They want someone who knows them personally.
- They want options.
- They want continuity of care — even if a transfer becomes necessary.
Joanna even continues supporting her clients if they transfer to the hospital during labor — something many midwives do not offer.
“I believe strongly in continuity of care,” she said. “If they go into the hospital, they need someone who knows them — someone who can advocate and support them through an uncertain moment.”
That alone speaks volumes.
Her commitment doesn’t end when plans change.
It’s rare.
It’s beautiful.
And it’s exactly what so many moms are longing for.
