I photographed an 80th birthday recently.

And while I love being invited into someone's life for something like that, I have realized something about the kind of photography I want to create.

I don't really want to simply document an event.


I want to make art.

There is a difference.


As a Pittsburgh family photographer, I want to look at the people in front of my camera and think about how we can create something that feels like them, but also feels like something you would want to hang on your wall.


Something you might still love looking at twenty years from now.


That is what keeps pulling me toward heirloom photography.


I want to photograph the relationships, the little pieces of personality, the way your children look at you, the way your family fits together. I want to create photographs that feel beautiful and intentional rather than simply checking “family pictures” off the list.


And honestly, I am still figuring out exactly what that looks like in this next season of Roadhouse Photography.


I am working through my pricing. I am working through my workflow. I am building a studio that I have dreamed about for years. I am figuring out how all of these pieces fit together so that the experience feels as intentional as the photographs themselves.


It is a work in progress.


But I know the direction I want to go.


I want to photograph mothers and their children. Families. Expecting mothers. Generations together. The people and seasons of your life that you know you will want to remember.


And I want to make something beautiful with them.


Fall in Western Pennsylvania


This fall, I have two Saturday openings during what is usually one of my favorite times of year—the leaves.


If you have been thinking about fall family photos in Pittsburgh or Western PA, this would be a particularly beautiful time to create something that is more than a quick picture for the Christmas card.


We can slow down.


We can choose beautiful clothes.


We can wander through the leaves.


We can let the kids be themselves.

Founding Mothers


I am also continuing to build my Founding Mothers project, which is very close to my heart.


It is about mothers and daughters, grandmothers and grandchildren, the stories that get passed down, and the women who quietly shape generations.

It is photography, but it is also about the history of a family.

Building something local


I am also making myself do something that does not come naturally to me: meeting people.


I am reaching out to local businesses, introducing myself, and looking for ways Roadhouse Photography can become a part of our community.

It is uncomfortable.


I am doing it anyway.


Because I don't want to build a photography business that exists only on a screen.


I want to know the people I photograph.


I want to make beautiful things.


I want to be part of this community.


And I want to build something that feels like Roadhouse Photography from the ground up.
