If the thought of family photos already has you feeling a little stressed…

you’re not alone.

Most moms I talk to aren’t worried about themselves—

they’re worried about their kids.

“What if they don’t listen?”

“What if someone melts down?”

“What if it’s just chaos the whole time?”

Let me gently say this:

It probably will be a little chaotic.

And that’s not a bad thing.

As a Pittsburgh family photographer, I don’t expect perfect behavior—

I expect real life. And that’s where the magic actually happens.

1. Don’t Over-Prep Them

You don’t need to give a big speech or put pressure on them to “be good.”

In fact, that usually backfires.

Instead, keep it simple:

“We’re going to hang out, play a little, and take some pictures.”

That’s it.

Kids don’t need expectations—they need space to be themselves.

2. Let Go of “Perfect”

This one is the hardest.

The perfectly smiling, everyone-looking-at-the-camera photo?

It might happen.

But the photos you’ll actually love?

They’re the ones where:

  • your toddler is wrapped around your leg
  • your kids are laughing at something completely random
  • you’re in the middle of it, not controlling it

Those are the images that feel like your life.

3. You Don’t Have to Do It All (Really)

Let’s just say this out loud:

You don’t have to carry the entire session on your shoulders.

In fact… you can’t.

And you’re not supposed to.

This is where I take a lot off of you.

  • The client closet is there so you’re not stressing over outfits
  • Hair and makeup is there so you can actually feel like yourself (or maybe even better)
  • Everything is planned out ahead of time so you’re not figuring it out last minute

And while you’re getting ready?

Dad can step in.

He can slip sundresses over little heads, help with shoes, comb hair, and get the kids out the door.

And honestly? That’s part of the story too.

4. Trust Your Photographer (This Matters More Than You Think)

If you’re constantly trying to correct your kids, it creates tension fast.

I’ve got you.

I’ll guide when needed, but I’m also watching for the in-between moments—the ones you don’t even realize are happening.

You don’t have to manage everything.

You just have to show up and be with your family.

5. Give Yourself More Time Than You Think You Need

Rushing into a session sets the tone for stress.

If you can:

  • plan outfits ahead of time (or lean on the client closet)
  • have snacks ready
  • leave a little earlier than necessary

You’ll walk in feeling calmer—and your kids will feel that too.

6. Focus on Connection, Not Control

This is the shift that changes everything.

Instead of:

“Stand here. Smile. Look at the camera.”

Try:

  • pulling them in close
  • whispering something silly
  • holding their hand and walking together

Connection always photographs better than control.

Always.

7. Know That You Don’t Have to Earn These Photos

You don’t need perfectly behaved kids to deserve beautiful images.

You don’t need a stress-free day.

You don’t need everything to go right.

You just need to show up.

A Little Reminder Before Your Session

The moms who walk away loving their photos the most?

They’re not the ones whose kids were “perfect.”

They’re the ones who let go, leaned in, and trusted the process.
